Volunteers needed for community service project

Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte

CAMA was recently awarded a Community Service grant from the American Marketing Association (AMA) Foundation to help support the marketing efforts of a non-profit community organization during its 2007-2008 fiscal year. CAMA selected the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte (RMH) for this Community Service grant because of the opportunity to provide marketing and communications expertise for a great brand in the startup stages.

CAMA will be recruiting volunteers to help with this project through their membership and network of local professionals, as well as teaming with UNC Charlotte’s sports marketing MBA program.

Interested in participating in this project?  Please contact Doug Poppen, CAMA President, at doug.j.poppen@lowes.com

CAMA member profile

  • Melissa DeCosta-Smith Name: Melissa DeCosta-Smith
  • Employment: Currently seeking full time employment as a Marketing Manager for a mid to large size company
  • AMA member since: May 2008
  • Hometown: Originally from Northwest New Jersey, but now call Winston-Salem NC home
  • Personal Stats: I worked for Deloitte & Touche LLP in Parsippany New Jersey as an auditor for 3 years upon graduating with an undergraduate degree in Accounting and becoming a CPA.  Realizing I was not interested in the partner track, I decided to go back to school to earn a graduate degree in business and facilitate a career transition.  I moved to North Carolina to attend the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem full time and graduated with an MBA in Marketing in May 1999.  The majority of my career since then was with Hanesbrands (formerly Sara Lee Branded Apparel), where I worked my way up to Senior Marketing Manager in the Sock division.  My most recent experience was with Liberty Hardware Manufacturing Company, where I was the Product Marketing Manager on the Bath Hardware business.
  • Last book read: I currently have at least 6 books “in process” (business, career, pleasure) and am ashamed to admit that the last book I actually finished was the unauthorized biography of Tom Cruise!
  • Why you joined AMA: I joined the AMA as an integral part of my job search and professional development.  The learning and networking opportunities provided by the AMA are fantastic.
  • Company whose branding you admire, and why: I would have to say Target.  Their branding is so consistent that you know an advertisement is for Target even before you see it is.
  • Most significant trend currently affectly the marketing, communications and PR industry in the U.S.: Information overload, TIVO & the internet.
  • Advice to college graduate just starting a career in marketing, communications and PR: Network! Network! Network!  And new media!
